All Valley Winds yarns are creatively hand-spun and often hand-carded to achieve the unique qualities of a hand-spun. Every attempt has been made to assure accurate details about the yarns; however, there will be variation throughout. Unlike the predictability of machine spun, these yarns will inspire YOUR creativity and call forth your adaptability - just as home-spun did for your great-grandmother and her mother. Relish the diversity of it all.

Recommendation for all hand-spun or hand-dyed yarns: Intersperse yarns from each hank throughout your work (rather than use one skein before going to the next). This will blend the variations in color and texture in a more pleasing way. Remember to start and stop at the end of
a row and not in the middle. Single ply has a tendency to skew due to the energy of the yarn. It's best used in non-fitted garments, like shawls, afghans, and scarves.

Valley Winds will add a line of small-mill spun alpaca yarns in November, 2002. The fibers we send to our Colorado small mill are from prime blanket fleeces produced by friends, neighbors and fellow Coloradans. It's impossible to handspin all the beautiful fiber. This is the next best way to bring you a choice product line. Come back soon for more information.

As beautiful as the natural alpaca colors are, sometimes you just need a splash of color. Coming soon - our myriad of colors line. Hand-dyed, fun, and oh-so unique, bright, and earthy. To die for.... and worth the wait.

Some fiber projects call for the uniformity of machine-spun yarns. We offer the finest 100% alpaca—America's Alpaca—a product of the American alpaca breeders cooperative. Available by special order in their full range of colors or in stock in the most popular selections.

100% alpaca - 4 ply
DK weight (double knitting - a British knitting term indicating a weight of yarn a little thinner than our customary American worsted weight)

1-3/4 oz skeins, 110 yds/skein
4-5 sts/in on 6-7-8 needles

Ready to spin. Having a well-prepared roving is critical to ensuring spinning pleasure. Roving that has been poorly processed with much residual vegetable matter is tedious to spin and quickly frustrating to the beginner. Valley Winds uses a small, well-established processing mill in Colorado where we know our fleeces will be handled individually and given special attention. We send in fine fleeces and get fine rovings back.

Raw Fiber

As beautiful as raw alpaca fleece is, rovings are the way to go. They're easier to store and protect, but more importantly, they're ready to spin when you are. But if it's raw fiber you want, we can get it for you. Just name your requests - color, staple length, price per pound. We'll find it. And, if you wish, have it processed into rovings for you. Procurement services - $50 plus costs of products and shipping.
